Reciprocating rack and pinion mechanism

 Reciprocating rack and pinion mechanism
This is a still shot of an animated rack-and-pinion mechanism designed to convert a continuous rotary motion into a reciprocating motion. It seems so simple once you see it, but I'm not sure I ever would have thought of it myself.

This is just one of many well done mechanical animations which can be viewed at www.mekanizmalar.com. (You'll want to scroll down below the fold of the page to see most of the animation thumbnails.)

So what decides the reciprocating amplitude? The number of teeth?
